El primer ministro de Turquía, Recep Tayyip Erdogan, dijo que "los acontecimientos en el frente interno de la política israelí provocaron la suspensión de la quinta ronda de negociaciones indirectas entre Israel y Siria". Erdogan hizo estas declaraciones en una conferencia de prensa realizada al término de la reunión que mantuviera con los presidentes de Siria y Francia y el Emir de Qatar. Erdogan aseguró que Assad mostró posturas constructivas en las negociaciones y que es por ello que "Turquía está muy conforme con los resultados obtenidos y los contactos iniciados".

El presidente francés, Nicolas Sarkozy, advirtió hoy en Damasco que Irán se arriesga cuando sigue adelante con su actividad nuclear y dijo que un ataque de Israel sería una "catástrofe". "Irán asume un riesgo muy grande cuando continúa proveyéndose de armamento nuclear - de eso estamos seguros - porque puede ser que despertemos un día y descubramos que Israel, sin importar quién está al frente, atacó". "La pregunta no es si el ataque es legítimo o inteligente, La pregunta es qué se hace en un caso como éste. Sería una catástrofe y debemos evitarla", aseguró Sarkozy.

US Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice and Polish Foreign Minister Radek Sikorski signed a deal Wednesday that will put an American missile defense base in Poland, a move that has angered a resurgent Russia. The formal signing came six days after the two countries agreed to a deal that will see 10 US interceptor missiles placed just 180 kilometers from Russia's westernmost frontier. The deal has sparked threats from Russia that Poland is making itself vulnerable to attack - even a nuclear one.

Israeli judo competitor Gal Yekutiel was defeated in the match for a bronze medal in the 60kg weight class on the first day of the Beijing Olympics Saturday. He lost to Ruben Houkes of The Netherlands. The 26 year old, competing in his second Olympics, secured his place in China with a fifth place finish in the 60 kilogram competition at April's European Championships. The best achievement of his career came in the previous Europeans in 2007 when he clinched the bronze medal.

Foreign Ministry spokesman Hasan Qashqavi says Iran welcomes the arrest of former Bosnian Serb president Radovan Karadzic on genocide charges. The official news agency IRNA is quoting Qashqavi as saying the arrest is a "historic and unforgettable moment" and that his trial may help alleviate the suffering of victims' relatives. Karadzic is expected to be handed over to the U.N. war crimes tribunal next week.
