Syria, Iran and Hizbullah are preparing for war with Israel, a Channel 2 report said Wednesday night. According to the report, Syria has set the month of August as the month it will finalize preparations, The report came just hours after the security cabinet concluded a meeting, which was devoted mainly to the Syrian front.
Hizbullah will never leave southern Lebanon and it has missiles that can hit central and southern Israel, Transport Minister Shaul Mofaz told US Secretary of State Condoleeze Rice in Washington.Mofaz is participating in routine bilateral strategic talks with the United States, leading an Israeli team that includes the director-generals of the Foreign Ministry, the Defense Ministry and the National Security Council, as well as the chairman of the Atomic Energy Council. Mofaz told reporters that he also raised the issue of closing the border between Lebanon and Syria to prevent arm shipments to Hizbullah.
Prime Minister Ehud Olmert stressed at the cabinet meeting, that Israel seeks peace with Syria, and must be wary of miscalculations that could lead to an unwanted escalation. Olmert said he does not rule out direct dialogue with Syria, but without any preconditions. The prime minister also asked ministers to refrain from discussing the subject in the media.
The cabinet also decided to establish an 11 member ministerial committee who will receive regular briefings on the situation as well as details of the army's preparations. At Wednesday's meeting, ministers received updates from senior intelligence officials on the situation in Syria and Lebanon. Military intelligence assessments indicated that while Syria has beefed up its military deployment, there are no signs that it is preparing for an attack.
