To enhance Israel's security and combat threats from Iran,Syria and other Arab countries as well as Pakistan, Israel has succeeded in extending the distance capability of the Jericho 3 surface to surface missile to 4,800 kilometers.
Details were revealed in the US Wisconsin Project report that monitors the progress of nuclear weapons in countries throughout the world.
According to the report, the Jericho 3 missile has been operational in the Israeli Air Force since 2005. The Jericho 3 missile is capable of carrying a nuclear warhead and follows the Jericho 2 surface to surface missile that has a distance capability of 1,500 kilometers.
Foreign media reports in the past reported that in 2001 the Israeli Aircraft Industries conducted a successful experiment on the Jericho 2 missile.That same year an IDF spokesman confirmed that the Jericho 2 is in fact the Shavit, the three stage satellite or solid propellant launcher designed to carry payloads of up to 250 kilograms into low earth orbit.05/03/07.
