As the end of the six month truce with Hamas approaches, Israel warned it would launch a military response for every rocket  fired from Gaza . On Sunday ,Hamas leaders  in Gaza and Damascus declared they had no intention of renewing the truce with Israel unless it agrees to meet all the conditions.

Meanwhile  Foreign Minister Tzipi Livni declared that a truce marked by constant attacks was meaningless.

At a meeting with her Austrian counterpart, Livni said: "All fire from Gaza will obligate us to respond so
as to defend our citizens. We will not leave Gaza in Hamas' hands."

Defense Minister Ehud Barka however appears to have opted for a more dovish approach.
Maj.-Gen. (res.) Amos Gilad who was dispatched to Cairo for talks on Sunday
on extending the cease-fire in the Gaza Strip. reportedly came away empty handed. Despite the fact that over 200 mortar shells and kassam rockets have been fired at southern Israel in recent months, Barak appears to be in support of extending the truce rather then launching a military operation,  the opposite of senior IDF officers, who have called for the resumption of military operations against Hamas in the Gaza Strip once the six-month cease-fire expires on Friday. 12/15/08
