Iranian ships and submarines have deployed an undisclosed number of Iranian troops and weapons at the Eritrean port town of Assab at the Horn of Africa in the Arabian Sea just below the Strait of Hormuz.
As such, the port town is in a unique postion  its location allows it to control and monitor one of the world's most strategic shipping routes.

According to local reports Iranian troops and a large number of long range ballistic missiles have also been deployed at a military base at the port and Iranian unmanned drones daily patrol the area..
It appears that Iran is using the pretext of an accord it signed with Eritrea to revamp a Russian built refinery there to station its troops and maintain a strong military presence with full  command of the Straits of Hormuz . At the same time  as the world's second largest importer of gasoline, its deal with Eritrea  guarantees it a constant supply free from  international intervention. The President of Eritrea has already granted Teheran  complete and exclusive control of the Eritrean Oil Refinary

Meanwhile there is concern in Israel over reports suggesting Iran has recently tripled its missile arsenal and is estimated to have over 100 Shhab 3 missiles that are capable of striking any point in Israel compared with the thirty missiles it had in its aresenal at the beginning of 2008. While the missiles are armed with one ton conventional warheads they are also capable of carrying nuclear warheads.
This latest build-up potentially points to an Iranian intent to launch a protracted counter-strike against those who seek to destroy its nuclear program.12/09/08

Israel should warn Eritrea

Submitted by Anonymous on Sun, 01/04/2009 - 10:19.
Eritrea should pay for its deeds, Eritrea has been supporting international terrorist groups for decades. Its supporting the Alqaeda affiliated Alshabab islamist group in Somalia. Eritrrea's distabilising role in the region seems to be expanding across the redsea now. It has joined Iran and has started to threaten Israel by allowing Iran to have a base in the port town of Assab. Israel should keep a close look at the unfolding situation in the redsea port of Assab and take action against Eritrea, which is a state sponsor of terrorism in the jorn of Africa. Eritrea is working hard to attack nations in the area that have good relation with the USA. Currently the rockets that are hitting Israel according to the Jerusalem post and some intelligence agencies are being smuggle across Sudan, into Egypt and Israel from Eritrea. The country's president ,Mr Afewroki is trying to join the Arab league and has got observers status in the organisation. He seems to be trying to be more Arab by showing his allegiance to Hamas and other state sponsors of terrorism like Iran. Israel need to keep an eye on the political development in the tiny horn of African nation Eritrea thats being run by Hamas style regime.

Iranians in Assab port? and the terrorist leader of Eritrea?

Submitted by Anonymous on Wed, 12/24/2008 - 17:53.
Well! why not, both Iranian and Eritrean leaders know very well that US and Israel don't steack with their traditional alies, most importantly Ethiopia for that troubled east African regions, otherwise Ethiopia could have beat the crap out of Esayass Afeworki ands therefore he will be a trate to no one. Israel and the US should unconditionaly stand b y Ethiopia and support them militarly and or otherwise, for as long as the Ethiopians stay the course wqith Israel and the US

Mr. Ahmadinnerjacket, You Just Got the Word

Submitted by Anonymous on Mon, 12/15/2008 - 05:43.
Well, President-Elect Obama, just made himself perfectly clear. If Iran uses a nuclear weapon, Iran gets completely annihilated. The U.S. doesn't want to do this. But there should be no mistake on the part of the Iranian leadership. We've done it before, and anyone who breaks the Nuclear Taboo, will experience the real Hell. Iran thinks it's got some scary submarines and ships in the Straits of Hormuz. An Iranian sub could be sitting on top of a U.S. Nuclear Submarine, and the Iranians wouldn't even know it. Oh, and I'd say the U.S. has some pretty cutting-edge stealth ships mixed in with those big tough Iranian ships. Iran--and Mr. Ahmadinnerjacket--haven't EVEN GOT A CLUE about what they're up against. An Iranian war with the U.S. would be a Six Minute War.

The presence of Iran in the Horn of Africa

Submitted by Anonymous on Sat, 12/13/2008 - 17:21.
The presence of the Iranian troops in Assab is not only a threat to Ethiopia, it is also a threat to countries around The Red sea and the world as a whole. Iran as oil rich supporter of Islamic fanaticism, being able to control the red sea and the presence of Somalia pirates not far from Assab and being funded and trained by the Eritrean government make the siuatio more global than regional.Countries like Israel, Saudi Arabia,Yemen, Djibouti,Sudan are going to be affected by the Iranian presence. The buisness world and the countries that are likely are going to be affected by the situation has to call for UN SECURITIES assessment of the situation. Peace to the world

Ethiopia is seriously threatened by Iran and Eritrea

Submitted by Anonymous on Fri, 12/12/2008 - 21:53.
Iran and Eritrea have launched unprovoked and naked agression against Ethiopia. The presence of Iranian missiles in the door steps of Ethiopia is incompatible with Ethiopian stability and peace. Only those who are ignorant of Ethiopian history will underestimate the threat to Ethiopian security. I hope Ethiopia will act thoughtfully and courageously in due time.

Iranians and the port of Asab

Submitted by Anonymous on Fri, 12/12/2008 - 04:54.
Considering the fact that the president of Eritrea is truly as crazy as the Iranian fellow it does not bode well for any govt. in the region. The state of Eritrea is a mistake and we will all pay for it. We all knew from the start that all radical arabs were supporters of the Eritrean movement not out of concern for the rights of ordinary eritreans but rather out of a planned pan arabic gain. The arabs are distracted for the moment, the Irannians are desperate and the Eritreans ignored. Nothing good will come out of this combination.

Assab!

Eritrea Eritrea is now 18 years in existence. Look the mess it has created in the horn. I am afraid that all this will soon back fire on this country. We will be witnessing another Somalia in this failing state soon. Iran The Iranian move is not strategic. It will cost them a huge diplomatic energy to convience European, African and Arabs (who are giving them the benefit of the doubt) that their nuc ambition is peaceful. USA EU! do you see? What have I told you about Iran!! Ethiopia This unfortunate country has warned the whole world what is cooking in Eritrea. Zenawi will be pleased as Eritrea is messing up with big powers instead of focusing on the border issue. However, the country will be very cautious this time and will not repeat the bold move it has shown to stablize Somalia. Somaleland This is Allah given gift if it is used excellently!

this is a crazy move

Ethiopia Should Take a Bold Action

Submitted by Anonymous on Fri, 12/12/2008 - 00:08.
This latest news is a serious concern for the region, especially for Ethiopia – home to 80 million people. Ethiopians are to have fought multiple enemies of the region – including Italy in 1896 – have won paying huge sacrifices. If the information is true, the Ethiopian government has to make peace with some of the opposition within the country and take the needed action to naturalize the treat. The British and the Italians invaded Ethiopia via Eritrea and this development has some resemblance to the past. In fact many Ethiopians believe that the natural border of Ethiopia is the sea it self, and the government in Addis Ababa should reevaluate its earlier political statements and actions and embark new policy for the good of its people. The nation Eritrea is the indirect creation of – among others - the Iranian government. Back in the early 1980s, the Ayatollah government provided huge financial support to the rebels. The government is Addis too has played a subtle but weak role in accepting the Eritrean independence with out considering the possible ramification. Knowing that there had ever been a nation called Eritrea until 1992 – until the Ethiopian government allowed it to secede. The secession made Ethiopia the most populous nation in the world. To those who know the history of Ethiopia the existence of a belligerent nation next door was a treat. It is imperative the government of Ethiopia to think deep, wide and real with long term national interest in hand and come up with a bold and creative ideas that secures the safety of its people.

Ethiopia is going to pay for its friendship with Israel and U.S.

Submitted by Anonymous on Sun, 12/14/2008 - 09:40.
The Ethiopian government is seen by some radicals like the Iranian regime as a threat to the radical movement of militant Islam. Ethiopia made it hard for terrorists to find heaven in Somalia back in 1998 by completely destroying Al-Itihad al Islamiya. Egyptian government sent those terrorists trainers because Egypt wants weak Ethiopia that cannot use its nile water. The Iranians have supported the Eritreans throught their independence struggle. They want to expand Islamic states. That is not a problem but when they try to use it towards their advantage that is a problem. Ethiopia will continue to suffer because the Arabs are hateful of Ethiopia's foreign policy of befriending with the west. Ethiopia is poor and needs to depend on foreign aid from the west, what choice does it have. Arabs are governments are rude and racist. It cannot depend on their friendship becaue they are its historical enemies.
