Sources told Infolive.tv Monday that President Shimon Peres is considering tasking Transport Minister Shaul Mofaz with forming a new government, less than a day after Kadima chairwoman Tzipi Livni informed him of her inability to establish a new coalition.
Peres who met with leaders from the different Knesset factions will announce his decision at the opening of the Knesset's winter session on Monday afternoon,
Representatives of the National Union-National Religious Party and Yisrael Beiteinu factions who met with Peres called for elections "as soon as possible". Meretz voiced similar sentiments.
Meanwhile Defense Minister and Labor chairman Ehud Barak disregarded opinion polls published Monday morning projecting his party's win of only 11 seats in the next Knesset, compared with the 19 mandates it currently holds. "Polls are just a snapshot of a passing moment and I recommend that everybody not be overly impressed by them," Barak said during an interview with Israel Radio. "Who knows what will be in three or four months," he said.
Polls by the Dahaf Research Institute predicted that if elections were held today, Livni's Kadima Party could win 29 of parliament's 120 seats, the same number it has now, and Netanyahu's Likud would take 26.10/27/08
