It appears that Kadima and the Labor Party are closer than ever to striking an agreement that will pave the way for the forming of a new government led by Prime Minister designate Tzipi Livni. Media reports on Sunday quoted various sources affiliated with the coalition negotiations saying that the sides have reached the final stages of negotiations and may well draft an agreement before or during Succot.
Defense Minister Ehud Barak met with Kadima's Tzahi Hanegbi on Saturday night to discuss the issues at hand and Histadrut head Ofer Eini and attorney Yisrael Maimon are expected to meet on Sunday to sum up the understandings reached by both parties.
One of the bones of contention that remains between the two parties is the future of controversial Justice Minister Daniel Friedmann. Labor Party Knesset member Ophir Paz-Pines confirmed that substantial progress has been made and declared for the first time Kadima has agreed to some of the
Labor Party's demands. Speaking on Israel Radio, Pine-Paz cited two issues, Freidmann's future and
Barak's demand to spearhead negotiations with Syria among the issues that were delaying a coalition agreement. 10/12/08
