Iran is well on the way to building a nuclear bomb head of Military Intelligence Research Division Brig.Gen Yossi Baidatz warned the cabinet on Sunday. The IDF officer also slammed the international community for failing to put enough pressure on Iran to halt its nuclear enrichment program.
Baidatz noted that Teheran is also strengthening its ties with Hizbullah, Syria and Palestinian terror groups with the aim of becoming the leader of all the radical forces in the Middle East. "Iran is focusing its efforts in enriching uranium and improving the operational capabilities of its centrifuges," he said adding that the more moderate Arab states remain divided in their wish to act against Iran.
Relating to Syria, Baidatz said on one hand it is attempting to cement ties with the West while giving way to radicalism.
"The recent Damascus summit attended by French President Nicolas Sarkozy andthe Qatari royalty helped Syria to position itself as a key player in the regional process," he said. At the same time he added "Syria is funneling a great deal of weapons and ammunition to Lebanon, tightening its relations with Iran and fortifying its aerial and ground defenses." Hizbullah he said may not initiate a conflict but continues to take advantage of the calm on the northern border to rearm.
As for the negotiations concerning the release of IDF Gilad Schalit, Baidatz said Hamas is attempting to harden its stand realising that the Israeli soldier is a commodity with increasing value.
Meanwhile addressing a military parade broadcast live on state television, Ahmadinejad said on Sunday, "if anyone allows himself to commit even a tiny offense against Iran's legitimate interests, borders and sacred land, our armed forces will break his hand before he pulls the trigger."
The phrase "legitimate interests" is Iranian parlance for the country's nuclear program, which the West says is a cover for a nuclear weapon program. Iran, which denies the charge, already is under three sets of sanctions by the UN Security Council over its nuclear program. 09/21/08
