The European Film Academy announced today the list of 44 films recommended to be awarded at this year's ceremony.

There are 27 countries participating in the competition this year and the list includes the prominent participation of two Israeli films: "The Lemon Tree" and "Waltz with Bashir."

"The lemon tree", directed by Eran Riklis, tells the story of Salma, a Palestinian widow facing a senior Israeli government official - the defense minister - who built his house in front of his lemon grove on the border between Israel and the West Bank.

Security forces warn that Salma’s trees are threatening the minister’s security and ordered to remove them. Salma tries to save her trees.

Their struggle attracts Mira Navon, the minister’s wife, who is trapped in her new home and a very unhappy life.

Despite their differences, it creates a link between the two, in a story that shows at the same time other complex and prohibited linkages ,and the struggle of each person to survive.

"Waltz with Bashir ', is written and directed by Ari Folmer, who concludes that a recurring nightmare relates to the experiences of the First War of Lebanon, as a Israeli army soldier.

Intrigued by this enigma, decides to meet and interview old friends and comrades from around the world, in order to discover the truth about that time and about himself.

As the protagonist advances deeply in the past, his memory begins to slip surreal images. It is an animated film, which already won major awards.

Nominations of the European Academy for each category will be announced on November 8 at the next Film Festival in Spain in Seville. 09/04/08
