Israel on Saturday decided to permit two Free Gaza boats containing 46 foreign activists including the sister in law of former Prime Minister Tony Blair to enter Gaza waters on Saturday after a two day voyage from Cyprus.
Despite earlier belief that Israel would bar their entry, calling the activists plans to break the Gaza siege as provocation, consultations at a high government level supported allowing them to enter Gaza’s territorial waters.
Hamas leader in Gaza Ismail Haniya declared the activists’ arrival as a nail in the siege coffin. However some media reports quoted Gazans expressing displeasure over their arrival noting that they had hardly brought any provisions because there were too many activists on the boats.
The activists brought with them 200 hearing aids they intended to hand over to a local charity organization for children and also planned to distribute 5000 balloons. Israel said the boat would be inspected to ensure it was not carrying weapons and officials said any future such missionswould be reviewed by the government on an individual basis. 08/23/08
