A designer who grew up In New York's hassidic community has caused an uproar over his collection of dresses made of parchment and embossed with Torah inscriptions. Levi Okunov  says he was inspired by the prayers shawls draped around worshippers in synagogues and the heavily embossed Torah scroll covers he saw in his youth.08/14/08

Good inspiration, but.....

I think the design concept was applied badly and a bit offensive to a Christian like myself. The Torah and the prayer shawl represents the idea that G-d cares for men, and that in spite of their frailties and failures G-d is willing to guide them to a higher level. To use these symbols as seat fabric is so inappropriate. But the idea of using inspirational motifs for young peoples' clothes is a good one but must be done in a wholesome manner.

Jewish fashions :-)

Well... if it should become a worldwide fashion and youngsters everywhere and anywhere wore jewish symbols on their clothes... would that not be a good thing?

What a Horrible Thing

He does this for one reason only - to strike out against Judaism and rabbis - no matter how he 'dresses this up' - it is rude, inhumane, entirely rebellious against the holy symbols of Judaism - if he wants to spend his life making clothes - so be it - but this is not about clothes, but about one sick man's revenge against a religion which he clearly hates - and I imagine lots of authority bashing here - and he seems drugged out in this interview - it is one thing to exercise free will and be secular - it is another thing to bring disgrace to your family and Jewish upbringing. What a shame this is on his parents - and I am sure that is half the reason for this..

Really stupid, unconscious man, this fashion designer
