After a weekend of bloody fighting in Gaza between Hamas and Fatah supporters in which nine Palestinians were killed and scores wounded, Israel on Saturday evening in what it described as a humanitarian gesture, permitted 180 Fatah members in Gaza to cross into Israel.

Hamas operatives in Gaza attempted to prevent their escape by firing mortar shells and shooting at them as the Fatah supporters fled towards Nahal Oz.  The army said that the Fatah members who fled from Gaza were searched and stripped of their weapons before entering Israel.

A number of Fatah supporters were taken to the Soroka Hospital in Beersheba and the Barzilai Hospital in Ashkelon for treatment. The army said all those who fled Gaza will eventually be transported to the West Bank. Among the Palestinians who fled from Gaza is Ahmed Hilles a commander of the Fatah Tanzim and some of his family members.

The clashes on Saturday erupted between Hamas and members of the Hilles clan after Hamas officials accused the Hlles clan of being behind the explosion on a beach in Gaza in which a young Palestinian girl and five Hamas operatives were killed. 08/03/08
