A tractor driver from east Jerusalem was shot dead after he attempted to run over civilians near the entrance to Jerusalem's Liberty Bell Garden on Keren Hayessod Road, just meters from the King David Hotel where US Presidential candidate Barack Obama is due to stay during his visit in Israel. The tractor driver drove from the vicinity of the Yemin Moshe neighborhood and hit a number of vehicles and attempted to hit a bus. A Border Police officer in the area opened fire shooting the driver dead. Eleven civilians were wounded according to initial reports, one suffered moderate to serious injuries and the others suffered from light wounds. The wounded werre taken to Shaarei Zedek and Hadassah Hospital in Jerusalem. A gag order issued in the afternoon prevents all identifying details of the terrorist from being published. Six terror warnings were registered by the security establishment but none relate to concrete threats in the Jerusalem vicinity. Security forces and emergency crews at the site treating the wounded. Police have sealed off the area and are seeking to determine whether the terrorist acted alone. A helicopter was also dispatched to search the area. Tuesday's incident occurred just two weeks after an Israeli Arab terrorist killed three Israelis after running them down. Police officials said the swift actions of the Border Police officer prevented further injuries and the rapid response of security forces ensured that the incident was contained quickly. Roads leading to the site of the attack have been sealed off causing heavy traffic jams. 07/22/08
