It appears that a military operation in Gaza is closer than ever Prime Minister Ehud Olmert told reporters prior to leaving Washington on Thursday, hours after father of three, Amnon Rozenberg,51, was killed in a deadly mortar attack that hit the Nirlat paint factory in Kibbutz Nir Oz. Five other workers suffered light to moderate wounds and were taken to the Soroka Hospital in Beersheba. In a meeting with Defense Minister Ehud Barak who visited the site shortly after the attack, angry members of the kibbutz and communities located in close proximity to Gaza told the defense minister they were fed up with the situation, and declared it was time for action not talk.
For over seven years the Israeli communities located close to Gaza have been the targets of numerous rocket and mortar shell attacks, have met numerous times with Prime Ministers and government leaders in a bid to bring a halt to the situation, but to no avail.
“Gaza’s day of reckoning is likely, a military operation is closer than ever and it will precede the cease fire,” Barak told the kibbutzniks.Alan Shoster, head of the Shaár Hanegev Regional Council and other local community leaders told Barak that they were not prepared to bury any more people. Haim Yalin head of the Eshkol Regional Council said kibbutzim in the area had lived without any protection from the rocket and mortar attacks for years and told the defense minister that it was not the way to run a country.Unlike Kassam rocket attacks, there is no warning siren for incoming mortar shell attacks. Meanwhile on Thursday, members of Kibbutz Nirim spent the day comforting Rozenberg’s wife Tali and the couple’s three children Dor, Eldar and Yarden.06/06/08
