Soldiers manning the Hawara checkpoint outside of Nablus on Monday evening,  distanced Palestinians from the area after a would be suicide bomber wearing four pipe bombs strapped to his body was shot and killed. Sappers later detonated the explosives.

Close to 7 in the evening,  a military policewoman manning the checkpoint with other soldiers spotted the Palestinian approaching and noticed wires protruding from underneath his clothes. She asked the Palestinian to go through a metal detector and when the alarm was activated, asked him to lift his shirt, which he did, only  to reveal pipe bombs strapped to the right side of his body. The soldier alerted nearby troops of the  explosives, and asked the Palestinian to move away keeping his hands on his head. When he attempted to activate the explosives a soldier shot and killed him. It is not the first time Palestinians carrying explosives have attempted to pass through the checkpoint In the past security forces have caught Palestinian teens wearing bomb belts as well as pipe bombs who attempted to pass through the checkpoint and detonate the explosives near the troops, or had intended to hand them over to Palestinians waiting on the other side who planned to use the explosives in attacks inside Israel.05/20/08
