Israel is reportedly due to receive a powerful radar system from the United States, that will boost its air defense against ballistic missiles fired by Iran or any other enemy country.

According to media reports, US President George W, Bush is expected to discuss the issue during his upcoming visit to Israel later this week. Illinois Republican Rep, Mark Kirk told reporters that the radar is the second most important issue Bush intends to raise during his visit, aside from the peace process.

The radar system is capable of tracking an object the size of a baseball almost 3000 miles away and would allow Israel's Arrow missile defense system to engage a Shihab 3 missile about half way through its 11 minute flight from Iran to Israel,Kirk said adding that it would latch on to the incoming missile six times faster than Israel's Green Pine Radar system.

"This is the best thing to lower tensions between Israel and Iran because Iran presumably would be less likely to attack under such circumstances," Kirk said.

Israeli defense officials said the radar system was one of a range of "parting gifts" the Bush Administration is currently reviewing before the President leaves office in January next year.05/11/08
