It is not known which topic the National Police will explore with Olmert, but the gamut of possibilities is large. There are three corruption investigations, some ongoing, that have encircled Olmert since his ascension to Prime Minister.
One of the investigations involves using his political power to help a friend buy stakes in Bank Leumi. Police questioned Olmert on the issue in October, and concluded at the time that the Prime Minister had no hand in the deal. A second investigation deals with political appointments in exchange for favors, and the third and most highly publicized scandal revolves around his purchase of a Jerusalem apartment for an extremely low price. Some allege he gave favors in exchange.
'The prime minister intends to fully cooperate with law enforcement officials as he has in the past and he is convinced that once the truth is disclosed in the framework of the police investigation, the suspicions against him will disappear,' a statement issued by the Prime Minister's office Thursday read.
Calls for Olmert to step down came from some in the Knesset. Labor MK Shelly Yachimovich, who is a member of Olmert's governing coalition, said 'It has been proven beyond any doubt that the prime minister can't be under serial investigations and also suspected of crimes and also lead the country.'
Police questioned Olmert at 10AM Friday morning for one hour. 5/2/2008
