Israel and the United States recently signed an agreement to increase cooperation in nuclear safety,in a move by Israel to receive foreign aid to ensure that the nuclear reactor at Dimona continues to operate safely.
According to a report in Haaretz on Monday, the agreement upgrades previous accords between the two countries that were signed in the past twenty years. The agreement will allow the Israeli Atomic Energy Commission to access most of the latest nuclear safety regulations, technology and procedures available in the United States.
The report said the agreement was signed by Dr. Shaul Horev, director of the Atomic Energy Commission and Dr. Dale Klein chairman of the US Nuclear Regulatory Commission. The report notes that while the agreement is essentially a technical one, it is of importance to Israel who fails to receive international cooperation on the issue because it is not a signatory with the Non Proliferation Treaty.
In recent years, Israel has tried to broaden and improve ties in the nuclear field with various countries and organizations, mainly in order to ensure the safety of the compound in Dimona, and also to monitor the disposal of the nuclear waste.04/14/08
