Israel on Wednesday prepared for US President George W. Bush's historical three day visit to the region, and in Jerusalem unprecedented security measures were in effect to cater for the visit.
Seeking to advance peace between Israel and the Palestinians, Bush will touch down at Ben Gurion airport before noon today where he will be greeted by Prime Minister Ehud Olmert, President Shimon Peres and other Israeli dignitiaries. Following speeches by Bush, Olmert and Peres, the US President will be transported by helicopter to Jerusalem where he will meet with Peres. The two are expected to discuss the regional financial initiatives.
Later Bush will meet with Olmert who will be joined by Foreign Affairs Minister Tzipi Livni and Defense Minister Ehud Barak. Aside from discussing the peace initiative between Israel and the Palestinians, the Israeli leaders will also touch on Israel's security needs, and are also expected to discuss Iran's race for nuclear power.
In the capital meanwhile, thousands of police will line the streets that will be used by Bush and his entourage during the presidential visit. In some areas schools opted to shut down while others
adjusted their daily classes in accordance with the security needs during Bush's visit. Many of the capital's roads will be sealed off to cater for the presidential motorcade, and residents have been infomred not to park their cars along the routes being used by Bush, and threatened with them being towed away if they ignore the instructions.
On Thursday Bush will travel to the Palestinian Authority to meet with Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas, Prime Minister Salam Fayad and other Palestinian dignitaries.01/09/08
