The United States can expect a terrorist attack using nuclear or more likely biological weapons before 2013, a bipartisan commission reported in a briefing with Vice President-elect Joe Biden on Tuesday. The briefing which is scheduled to be publicly released on Wednesday, suggests the Obama administration should bolster efforts to counter and prepare for such attacks by appointing an official on the National Security Council to exclusively coordinate US intelligence and foreign policy on combating the spread of nuclear and biological weapons. 12/02/08

Thousands of Israelis gathered at funeral houses across the country on Tuesday to pay their respects to the six Jews killed by Islamist terrorists during the Chabad House massacre in Mumbai's last week. The funeral of Rabbi Gavriel Holtzberg, 29, and his 28-year-old wife Rivka, who had both served as Chabad emissaries in Mumbai was held at Kfar Chabad. Meanwhile, thousands of mourners gathered in the ultra-orthodox neighborhood of Mea She'arim in Jerusalem, for the funeral of Aryeh Leibish Teitelboim.

The Israel Air Force killed two Palestinian terrorists who fired mortar shells at the Kerem Shalom crossing on Tuesday afternoon. Four other men were also injured in the strike, which took place east of the southern town of Rafah in the Gaza Strip. According to reports, following ongoing mortar attacks throughout the day, Israeli jets identified the mortar launching cell and opened fire scoring a direct hit. Sources in Gaza reported that the Palestinians killed were two brothers, from the village of Shuka near Rafah. 12/02/08

The Labor Party postponed its primary elections on Tuesday following a series of technical malfunctions that shut down its new touch-screen voting machines. Stations across the country complained of technical glitches in the new system that replaced paper ballots. The mishap was just the latest setback for the embattled party which was once the dominant party in Israeli politics. Palestinians clashed with dozens of Israeli settlers in Hebron on Tuesday, seriously wounding an Israeli youth by striking him in the head with a rock. The clashes come after right-wing activists stepped-up preparations to resist a forced evacuation ordered by Israel’s High Court of Justice from a disputed property in Hebron. On Monday night, some 1,500 right-wing activists poured into the city to reinforce the residents of the disputed property after rumors spread that police were preparing to evacuate it. 12/02/08

Bank of Israel Governor Stanley Fischer voiced his support for a pension safety net plan on Monday but failed to side with either the Finance Ministry or the Prime Minister's Office in the heated dispute over the scope of the plan. While Fischer said that the Treasury's economic stimulus package targets a specific population at a relatively low cost, he also noted that the Prime Ministers Office’s plan presented last night, targets a larger group of people at a similar cost to the one proposed by the Treasury. 12/01/08

The Jerusalem District Court convicted Ahad Goolma, a senior Popular Front for the Liberation of Palestine operative, for his part in the assassination of former Tourism Minister Rehavam Ze'evi at Jerusalem's Hyatt hotel on October 17, 2001. Goolma, aged 40, was the head of the PLFP's military wing at the time of the assassination and was also found guilty of membership in a terror organization. Libya condemned Israel on Monday for preventing a Libyan boat from breaking the blockade against the Gaza Strip, calling the IDF a "terrorist, Zionist army". In a statement released by the official Libyan news agency, the country said that Israel had sent two navy ships, a fighter jet, and a submarine to force the boat to turn around.
