Israel says it is watching the crisis unfolding in Lebanon very closely but will not get involved at this point.
Deputy Defense Minister Matan Vilnai stated that Israel must remain "especially sensitive" to the situation in Lebanon after Hizbullah took over the western neighborhoods of Beirut. Tensions between the two countries have been high since the 2006 was between Israel and Hizbullah.
Vilnai recently told the IDF Radio station that Israel is prepared for the possibility that the situation in Lebanon will deteriorate, but he does not believe the situation will collapse into a full fledged civil war because all sides remember the bitter experience of the previous civil war, which lasted from 1975 to 1990.
